’25 & Out’ Retirement – It Makes Sense

CIU and PSAC have prepared a series of flyers on major FB bargaining issues, explaining what we are fighting for. This week, the issue is  ’25 & Out’ – the possibility of retiring after 25 years of service.

Retirement – 25 & Out

What do we want?

  • Treasury Board and CBSA to support the introduction of an early retirement option consistent with what other federal public service employees working in similar enforcement capacities receive.
  • The same benefit they receive – the ability to retire after 25 years of service without a penalty. In other words, an employee could leave after 25 years of service and receive a 50% pension entitlement with no penalty, as per regular pension calculations (2% x total years of service).

Who else can retire after 25 years without penalty?

  • Air Traffic Controllers
  • RCMP Constables
  • Corrections Officers

Why do we need it?

  • Maintaining the physical standards that come with the job becomes increasingly difficult with age. Many employees who are unable to meet these standards over time have accommodation rights under the law. That is why workers in similar occupations are able to retire early.
  • Early retirement without a penalty would allow those officers who have worked for 25 years and have difficulty maintaining physical standards the opportunity to move on with dignity.

Why are we fighting for it?

  • It’s fair and it makes sense.
  • It reduces the need for accommodation.
  • We deserve the same treatment as other law enforcement personnel.
