CIU members rally at Peace Arch border crossing

Peace Arch

With the employer still refusing to budge on meaningful improvements, our members are ramping up pressure to be treated fairly: After rallying in Saint John, N.B. at the beginning of the year, FB members are now mobilizing in B.C., where they gathered at the Peace Arch border crossing on February 5.

CIU-PSAC members are calling on the government to treat Border Services Officers with the respect they deserve by withdrawing concessions being put forward at the bargaining table.

What we want

  • We’re asking for a fair wage increase that keeps up with inflation, better protections for members from CBSA management, and improved work-life balance.
  • We’re asking the employer to support pension reform to allow retirement after 25 years of service without penalty, as is the case for other law enforcement agencies.

Members Hold Rally in Halifax

Members of the CIU Nova Scotia Branch rallied in Halifax early this morning, bringing attention once more to the importance of the work performed by the front-line men and women who keep our country’s borders safe, and deserve fair treatment.

“Our members act as Canada’s first line of defense,” said CIU 3rd National VP Joey Dunphy. “Every day, Border Services personnel stop drugs and weapons from entering the country. They apprehend criminals, and they help protect our communities. In short, they perform the same work as other law enforcement personnel, and it is high time that they be recognized as such.”

After 3.5 years of bargaining, the employer is still pushing for concessions that devalues the work members of the FB Group perform on behalf of all Canadians, and continues to refuse to provide parity with other law enforcement agencies.

FB Members Rally in Cornwall

Following the last day of the Public Interest Commission (PIC) hearings, CIU members in Eastern Ontario (Branch 70027) demonstrated and handed out flyers in Cornwall to tell the employer that, as the country’s first line of defence, FB members (border services) are law enforcement officers – they deserve fair treatment and a fair contract. That’s why CIU and PSAC are advocating for parity with other law enforcement agencies for FB members.

Also demonstrating with the members were CIU National President Jean-Pierre Fortin, 2nd National Vice-President Chantal Rajotte, and Eastern Ontario Branch President Kim Poirier.

CIU and PSAC Rally for a Fair Contract for FB Members

On September 29, delegates and attendees participating in the 2017 National Convention rallied in front of CBSA offices in downtown Ottawa regarding the ongoing bargaining process with the government. FB members have been without a contract for more than 1200 days.

The Union sent a clear message to the Employer: Members are united and the FB group deserves a fair contract now. Among the major issues that were brought up were wage parity with other law enforcement agencies and ’25 and Out’ – the possibility of retiring after 25 years without penalty.

A video of the rally was published on our Facebook page. You can also find a few pictures of the demonstration below.
