Statement on incident at Ambassador Bridge

The Customs and Immigration Union is aware of the tragic incident that took place earlier today (November 9) in Windsor, where a border officer took their life at work. We wish to express our most sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased — our thoughts are with all who are affected by these difficult circumstances.

Incidents such as this one bring to light the challenges public safety personnel may be confronted with throughout their career, and they remind us of the need for a comprehensive mental health support structure and of the importance of taking down barriers to access these services, both in professional and private settings. These tragedies also serve as a reminder of the value of supporting each other in the face of hardship. The death of a member is difficult for all, and we recognize the impact this sad event has on our community — should any member require support, please contact the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) at 1.877.367.0809 (TTY: 1.877.338.0275) for confidential assistance.

Out of respect for the deceased and their family, CIU will not be commenting further at this time.

CIU members rally in Windsor

Rally in Windsor

More than 100 CIU members marched in Windsor on Monday December 16 to call upon the government to bargain fairly. National President Jean-Pierre Fortin was present, sending a strong message to the employer: “We want respect, we want to have a good contract and we want it as soon as possible”.

This display of solidarity by CIU members and allies is just a taste of what’s to come in 2020: We intend to hold the employer’s feet to the fire and fight for a fair contract – from coast to coast to coast.

Our PSAC-CIU FB group bargaining team is returning to the table in January 2020 and is ready to keep fighting, be it for better protections from CBSA management, improved work-life balance, a fairer medical note policy, paid firearm practice time, and more. The union is also advocating for 25-and-out to be implemented: FB members are law enforcement, and they deserve the same treatment as other law enforcement agencies.

Yesterday, CIU National President Jean-Pierre Fortin met with members from several branches in Southern Ontario – Hamilton, Windsor, and Niagara Falls – to discuss ongoing bargaining efforts and union matters.
