Meeting in Ottawa this week, CIU convention delegates held a moment of silence for Leïla Ben Salem, a member of the Union of Taxation Employees (UTE).
Speaking to convention attendees, CIU National President Mark Weber underlined the tragic nature of this death:
Yesterday we learned through PSAC of the tragic death of Leïla Ben Salem, a member of UTE Local 10008, who was fatally attacked earlier this week while on a video call with a colleague.
This shocking event serves as yet another reminder of the need to do more to stamp out violence in our communities and violent acts targeting women. I echo the words of the PSAC National President: As a union, we stand together in grief, but also in our commitment to building a world where everyone can live and work in safety and dignity.
Let us have a moment of silence for Leïla Ben Salem.
