The second day of the 21st CIU National Convention saw delegates continue to work on Convention business, with reports from National Representatives. Delegates also discussed the budget for the next cycle, and heard presentations from invited guest speakers:
- Andréanne Angehrn, Ph.D., from the Psychological Trauma and Stress Systems (PTSS) Lab, regarding occupational psychological injury.
- PSAC Health & Safety Officer Andrea Peart and PSAC Research Officer Darren Pacione, with an important update regarding a planned cancer study focusing on CBSA workplaces set to launch this fall.

CIU stands with striking Bank of Canada Workers
CIU branches are answering the call to support PSAC DCL 71250 members working at the Bank of Canada who have now been on strike for more than three months. As Bank of Canada workers continue the fight for a fair collective agreement, CIU branches will be donating more than $7000 to support the strike efforts.
Delegates attending the 21st National Convention also demonstrated their support by joining PSAC DCL 71250 members on the picket line, sending a clear message that these workers’ fight is also our fight, especially at a time where the federal government seeks to undermine workers’ rights. Rally participants heard powerful speeches from PSAC NEVP Alex Silas, CIU 2nd NVP Brea Baresinkoff, and USJE National President David Neufeld. CIU national representatives were also present, along with Life Members Danielle Dubuc, Ron Moran and Garth Brewer. Also joining the rally were PSAC NCR REVP Ruth Lau MacDonald and FB Negotiator Morgan Gay, amongst others.
Why are Bank of Canada security workers on strikes?
The biggest obstacle to an agreement is the Bank’s attempt to remove scheduling rights language from the collective agreement and add new language granting the employer the ability to change a member’s shift, location, and working hours with only 24hrs notice.
Feathers ruffled
The rally, which saw members march around the Bank of Canada building before assembling for speeches, was a resounding success and ruffled the employer’s feathers, with management unable to resist complaining to the police.
